Project Overview
To meet the stringent demands of a live surgical environment, Nuway partnered with Barco Medical to develop a high-performance AV infrastructure based around the Barco Nexus Platform with a focus on medical-grade video handling, real-time processing, and operational simplicity.
Solution Delivered
Nuway Audio Visual were commissioned to design and install a state-of-the-art Digital Operating Room at a leading specialist hospital on Harley Street in London. The brief required the new system to integrate seamlessly with a pre-existing 4K(12G) surgical camera and deliver near zero-latency image transmission — a non-negotiable for surgical precision and clinical decision-making.
4K(12G) Visualisation & Video Routing
• 55” 4K Professional Large Format Display (DICOM-supported)
Providing ultra-clear imaging for clinical teams, with DICOM compatibility for accurate greyscale rendering of radiological scans.• Aurora 4K Encoder/Decoder
Facilitating high-bandwidth, low-latency video transmission over IP. This ensured seamless integration with the existing 4K surgical camera, preserving native resolution and achieving instantaneous display response.• Netgear 24×24 Fibre Switch & 10 Gigabit Network Switch
Forming the high-speed backbone for the entire system. Fibre switching eliminates bottlenecks, ensuring bandwidth stability for uncompressed 4K video and device communication.• Datavideo 4K Up/Down Converters
Ensuring format compatibility across legacy and new systems. Supports real-time conversion without signal degradation, ideal for bridging various 4K, 12G and 1080p devices in the medical workflow.
User Interface & System Control
• 22” Barco Touchscreen Monitor
Providing an intuitive, sterile-safe (one flat surface to sterilise, can work with surgical gloves) control interface for surgical staff or support team, enabling source selection, volume control, and video switching with a simple UI.• Digital Graphics Engine & Central Control Processor
Managing visual overlays, on-screen data (e.g. patient info, vitals), and backend logic for system automation. Enables fully customisable workflows to match surgeon preferences.
Audio System
• Crestron Digital Sound Processor (DSP)
Managing all audio inputs and outputs, including paging, procedure commentary, or remote consultation with explicit signal routing and EQ.• Crestron Power Amplifier + Ceiling Loudspeakers
Discreet in-ceiling audio delivery ensures audibility across the OR without clutter, preserving hygiene and acoustic clarity.
Outcome
Nuway’s solution successfully delivered a digitally integrated, near zero-latency operating room environment. The system not only enhanced real-time surgical imaging but also streamlined control through a unified, touchscreen-driven interface. Medical teams now benefit from instant, high-resolution feedback, improved collaboration, and scalable infrastructure for future medical technologies.
The future proof system allows for streaming, recording and data capture features to be easily added at a later date for training and legal storage purposes.
